The secrets of TCP Chimney offloading

Some time ago, about a month or so, we had a problem with our SQL Server 2005 running on Windows 2003. What started happening was that the scheduled jobs were failing due to many connections errors. After some searching I found out that the errors could be caused by the TCP/IP chimney offloading. This gets installed with the ‘Scalable Network Pack’ of Microsoft.

One of the things I tried to fix the problem was disable it but this caused even more trouble.

As you all might have noticed in the posts of the past few weeks we’ve been migrating from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. Well I’m happy to say that were almost done. And that after only two weeks.

A you may have read in the day after post the physical migration went al right. It was after migration we encountered some problems. I’ll give a short list of all the problems:

  • When running multiple SSIS packages at once the server breaks, our packages that take a bit longer fail reporting that InnerPackage.dtsx is locked by the OS.
  • The SQL server likes to allocate more memory in the physical memory the actually present, causing it to crash (can be fixed by setting a memory limit)

I’ve reduced the first problem by reducing the amount off time needed to execute the single SSIS packages.

You might be wondering why there haven’t been many entries over the past few weeks. Well its been a busy time for me. Really, I’m not just making ecuses ;) . So lets shed some light on what’s been going on.

At the work floor it’s rather busy because were in the middle of a migration from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. Which is taking up so much time that I don’t really have time to write articles. But I will make some about how to migrate soon. I promise :) .

Another thing that has been keeping me busy is the search for a place to live. Not that I’m on the streets right now or anything. It’s just time to get a new place. As I’ve been visiting many houses over the past weeks it leaves little time to write even short articles.

Now that all this BS is out of the why some news flashes:

I finally got Netbeans 6.0 working with web projects, a problem which I reported earlier in ‘Netbeans 6, a quick folow up’. It seems I downloaded the wrong version that was lacking the support. Dough… :(

Finally had some time to continue on my pet project MovServDex, made some bug fixes as can be read in ‘Internet Explorer Error’. I also started to work on some search capabilities, which at this time works kinda neet. Hopefully I’l post something about this soon.

And last but not least I’m thinking about dumping my corporate website Jong-Soft.com. Why, simple I haven’t updated it in ages. Nor do I really have the time to. It’s hard to write a blog, build my pet project, have a full time job and maintain a corporate website. (Not to mention all the other things I’m working on ;) .

How One Small Delay Can Have Huge Impact

In my company the developers work on quite some projects at once. Which isn’t that strange, it happens everywhere. Anyway, I currently have a very simple problem. I’ve been working on a lot of projects with dependencies on each other. For one of these updates I had to get some new text, which means going to our copywriter to get it and then having it translated. Now that I’ve completed all of my developer work I was kinda hoping to get everything live quickly.

Now here comes the problem. Appearantly the e-mail about the texts got lost. I’ve requested the texts two weeks back, but since I didn’t hear anything from the copywriter I decided to check. She never got the e-mail, which means nothing happened. Problem is that I can’t close the update until I have the text. Even worse is that I can’t do any work without closing at least some of the updates.

See my problem! So for the past couple of days I’ve been very bored. Trying to do some documenting and helping out others only gets you through so many hours of the day. Worst part of it is that I now need to wait probably another whole week on the translations.

What to do with all that time, when I still have to look like I’m working :) .

Playing Games At Work Good For Motivation

Bit of a strange title I know. But think about the following. You have hard working employees that are getting a bit stressed because of the work. Not that strange now is it. Can it help to allow them playing games?

I think so! My current employer tolerates it. If it doesn’t interfere with the work we are allowed to play a game just after lunch or during the Friday night drinks. Usually it doesn’t take up to much time from actual work, but I’ve found it helps relieve some stress. Which means increased productivity.

Haven’t had any complaints so far, so I’ll keep doing it. At least for as long as it helps me wind down a bit after a busy week of work.
